Some pages have
been updated
updated: 21-Dec-2003
The English version of the article Dun Karm Psaila has received a facelift, with some new photos having been added to enhance the page. There is also a Maltese version of this page.
Another page that has been updated, but which awaits inclusion of pictures, is our Maltese Personalities page, which deals with some of Malta's most famous sons -- both from the distant past as well as from more recent years.
These pages are mostly meant for students' research, hoping to provide a valid thought or two about our ancestors, including those lesser known. This will continue to expand over time.
N.B. Have you visited our Christmas in Malta page yet?
New photographs are being added from Maltese
Christmasses past and present.

A feature of my-malta.com (which should be updated more often) is "Your Window onto the Maltese Islands".
You may access this feature from our homepage, but -- for those who are not yet familiar with it as well as for those who may have missed a few pictures -- we are compiling these photographs in a dedicated page entitled "Portraits of a nation".
This is the first part; more photographs will be added on a regular basis to help you enjoy what you'd otherwise have missed. Thank you for visiting us regularly and raising our visitorship to-date to over 20,000 (with who knows how many hits each).

Remember that this is a weekly update (a commitment we are trying hard to keep up) so you are invited to visit us regularly to see more never before published photographs of Malta during the 1920s, thanks to Mr and Mrs Bailey (UK).
Some of these photos have special features; some can enlarge and others scroll sideways, so as to afford visitors a closer look at certain interesting details.
Moreover, my-malta.com aims to provide equally interesting annotations that explain some of the historical background behind some of the events and places shown in this exciting album.
The Nineteen Twenties were times of social contrasts and political turbulence in Malta. Suffice it to say that the ill-fated 1919 Bread Riots were still painfully vivid in everyone's memory. This fatal event was due to the corn-tax, making the price of bread (a loaf) more than lowly wages could afford, and this ...
Te Deum Time
Celebrations big time
uploaded: 22-Sept-2003
Steve Borg -- in his usual, colourful style -- takes us into the thick of the Saturday morning festivities at Zabbar, known also as Te Deum Saturday.
This is no ordinary Maltese festa. The town is divided into two factions; those supporting the (green) Tigers' bandclub and those siding with the (blue) Lions'. The spectacle is intensely colourful.
Amidst an evidently strong 'one-upmanship' there reigns a curious paradox: Greens and Blues mingle (under the watchful eye of the law) as if gunpowder and fire, but all was calm on this Saturday. And we hope to have transported our guests to this 'party of the year' -- this interesting bit of living Maltese tradition:
Te Deum Saturday.

Malta Story;
weekly installments

26-Sept-2003
As promised, we uploaded Part 2 of the Mason-Bailey Malta Story and have since added the first installment of the Mason-Bailey Family Album (Part 3, pages 1 and 2), with more to come in weekly installments.
The family's 1920 photographs will interest anybody who has Maltese recent history at heart. Street scenes, recreational pictures, trades and military photographs make this an amazing collection, not to be missed. Brief, yet interesting information is also added (inthe Album) with the intention of enlightening visitors about events depicted.
The second installment of the Album will follow next week, but do be sure to read the article before proceeding to the rest of the photos.
The Mason-Bailey
Malta Story;

Corporal John Mason
South Wales Borderers
uploaded: 12-Sept-2003
In this first part of a series entitled The Mason-Bailey Malta Story we get the opportunity to see Malta through the eyes of John Mason and his family, or rather through the photographic lense of the time; the 1920s.
John Mason was transferred to Malta as a casualty of WW1 and was to spend a considerable amount of time here, joined by his family after the conflict ended. Their stay was a rather fortunate one for us Maltese nationals (as well as for my-malta.com's visitors) for we now have the opportunity to see a number of previously unreleased photographs of colonial Malta, generously featured here thanks to Mason's kinsmen, Morag and Colin Bailey.
Morag tells us how the Baileys have been coming to Malta regularly since 1994 in their quest to revisit the places depicted in their rich photo collection, hoping to relive some moments from grandpa Mason's life and that of his family whilst stationed at Malta.
Part 2 (to follow next week) will continue to expand on the families' ties to Malta, while Part 3 anon will feature the 'Malta Album'.
Start the series by visiting Part 1 of The Mason-Bailey Malta Story.

Continuing where Part 1 of The Maltese Language left off, this article transports us back in time to investigate how the Maltese people's native tongue sounded over the centuries.
Did our Punic vernacular survive the Roman occupation? Was it totally overridden when the Arabs invaded? Readers are invited to read additional explanations in the form of 'popups' giving information about subjects like:
The different Bible versions;
The Holy Roman Inquisition;
Caxaro's Cantilena; and
Bonamico's Mejju Gie bil-Ward u Zahar ...
In the Maltese Language, Part 2, we look at the social and linguistic gaps extant during the rule of the Knights and throughout the British occupation, when the population spoke a different language to that of their rulers. But amidst the discussion as to whether Italian or English should be our national language, there was a movement in favour of the obvious ... which was not at all obvious in those days, i.e. that Maltese is the native tongue of Malta and her people.
il-Bajja tat-Torri l-Abjad
Article in Maltese

Nature Trust Malta is one of the entities campaigning to protect the last surviving Maltese sand dunes.
my-malta.com is pleased to carry this article, written by J.J.Bonnici, aimed at increasing public awareness regarding the value of these sand dunes, which provide an ideal habitat for a quantity of wild flowers, including some that are very close to extinction.
Here, Nature Trust tells us what is being done to protect the sand dune at Armier Bay (il-Bajja tat-Torri l-Abjad ). We also read how out of the 27 sandy bays in the Maltese Islands that once had such dunes, only 5 remain; il-ramla tal-Ghadira, tat-Torri l-Abjad and tal-Mixquqa on Malta, ir-Ramla l-Hamra on Gozo, and ir-ramla ta' Santa Marija on Comino. The rest of the remaining sandy beaches have little ecology left, for a number of reasons.
This article is written in the Maltese Language.

More Panoramic Photos
uploaded: 08-June-2003
In this series, my-malta.com does not aim to provide in-depth information about the featured sites. The main interest lies in the photographs, which speak for themselves.
As the 'panoramic' photos are quite large, these could take time to download, although they are optimised for speed while not sacrificing detail too much. What you should do is to 'click' the photo once, then scroll -- first using your right keyboard arrow, then back using your left arrow.
More pages in this series will follow shortly. Click the link to visit

Island of tranquility . . .
uploaded: 29-May-2003

Our Comino chapter kicked off with 15 major pages filled with pictures and information from and about our baby sister; the lovely island of Kemmuna (Comino).
The main page of this project introduces our visitors to Comino's own coat-of-arms and gives useful information to the visitor, including geographic and climatic data, as well as advice on how to get there.
Then comes the Overview, skimming over our November 2002 visit whilst serving as a brief intro to the pages that follow: The Crossing, after which we hastened to The Blue Lagoon, which lies close to The Comino Tower, which tells of its history. We speak of A Local Legend, a tale of the two hermits, before visiting that simple yet beautiful place of worship, the Santa Maria Chapel, with bits of history and local events surrounding the islanders' more recent past. Despite the pouring rain on that November morn, we went to The 1715 Battery, whereafter we proceeded to Congreve Road as we were Meeting Marija who shared with us some of the spirit of Comino life. On her advice, we went to Tal-Hmara, which has its own special story.
Other pages include the island's Eco-Conservation efforts, a look at the Comino Waters in an interview with an experienced diver, a listing of correct Local Placenames and a page dedicated to Old Comino Maps/Pictures. We conclude (for now) with an interesting piece about the treatment of Comino in the Arts, citing poems, prose and song about Comino, as well as films shot on location there.
Our principal aim is to promote respect for and the protection of Comino, its natural habitat and the privacy of its people.
Note: Those who have sound on their PC (especially ADSL or cable subscribers) should be able to listen to our signature tune "Mhabba f'Kemmuna" being used here with the kind permission of its author. This could take a few minutes to download.
