The music of Ruben Zahra portrays contemporary expression rooted in Mediterranean heritage. Traditional melodies, rhythm and instruments are transformed within the process of music composition to acquire an innovative style with a unique cultural identity.
Ruben Zahra started his musical training in Malta studying piano with Lydia Scerri and music theory with Lawrence Borg. After achieving his Licentiate diploma in music theory from the London College of Music he studied composition with Pawlu Grech. He graduated from the University of Malta in 1994 with a BA in Music and Theatre Studies and was awarded a scholarship by the Italian Cultural Institute to study composition at the National Music Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome with Azio Corghi. While in Italy he also studied Electronic Music at the Music Conservatory L.Refice of Frosinone with Giorgio Nottoli. In 2000 he moved to Oakland, California to pursue an MA in music composition at Mills College. When he graduated in 2002 he spent another two years living in Los Angeles, working as a composer for the Hollywood film industry.
