Preludju     This short prelude features the unique timbre of the Maltese reedpipe: iz-zummara. The simple ‘pastoral’ melody is accompanied by a steady pulse on the tanbur (tambourine) and a countermelody on the viola.

Performers: Ruben Zahra: zummara, Mario Frendo: viola, and Daniel Cauchi: tanbur.

Halel     Halel means ‘big waves’.   The song has an up-beat rhythm with a distinct melodic hook on the Maltese reedpipe: iz-zummara.   The Nafra folk ensemble is distinguished by the intricate instrumental arrangements of composer Ruben Zahra.   Halel is a good example of classical instrumentation applied to world music.

Performers: Ruben Zahra: zummara, Mario Frendo: viola, Yuri Charyguine: accordion, Tricia Dawn Williams: piano, Paul Borg: tuba, and Daniel Cauchi: drums and percussion.

Il-Helu Lehnek     The melodic line of the viola is a transcription of Ghana fil-Gholi while the intro and final cadence comprise traditional guitar patterns known as burduni.   The music is further embellished with a bass line on the tuba and melodic motives on soprano saxophone.

Performers: Mario Frendo: viola, Christine Vella: saxophone, Evan Plumpton: guitar, and Paul Borg: tuba.

Vintage Recordings

Tal-Hammarun (Hammarun’s tune)     Recorded at Buskett Gardens on the 28th of June 1958.

Toni Cachia Il-Hammarun: zaqq, Toni Bajjada taz-Zalzatt: tanbur, and Leli Cassar: zafzafa.

Sejvanvolin     In 1964 folklorist Guze Cassar Pullicino conducted a radio interview with 87 year-old Anglu Zammit, known as Il-Ha-Haj, from Siggiewi, who played the flejguta during carnival.   The interview also yields seven flejguta melodies with guitar accompaniment by Karmenu Cardona from Hamrun.

Il-Kuntradanza (Country dance),     also known as Il-Maltija, is today considered to be the Maltese National Dance.   The tune has an apparent folk character, similar to traditional Italian dance music. When the Kuntradanza is presented as a country dance the dancers wear peasant costumes commonly known as ta’ Zepp u Grezz.   However, the same music is used to accompany a ceremonial court dance in full eighteenth century attire.
